CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I stuck around for a few rounds of beer pong, mostly because I didn’t want to ditch Walker so hard. Unlikely as hell, but Ellis could have been right. He did seem a little… something. Once guys started pulling out lawn darts and fireworks though, I knew my kind of luck couldn’t sustain that. I couldn’t do an injury or an arrest, so I bounced.

The walk home would have taken thirty minutes, probably, on a normal night, but I was worn down and a little drunk and it seemed extra dark, so it probably took me close to an hour. Which put me walking up the street at the exact time I saw my mom’s shitbox Camaro skip over the curb and slide diagonal into the drive, stopping so close to the garage door it shuddered.

Welp. That was a quick detour through sober living.

I paused a few houses down to watch her get out of the car, my stomach turning sour, wondering if I was gonna have to puke in somebody’s bushes. The driver’s side door groaned with the ugly metal on metal rub you could hear a block away, still out of alignment from the last thing she’d hit, and she stumbled out, one leg of her bright pink tights shoved into her boot, the other one bunched up around her knee. It was fucking ridiculous she’d made it home in one piece and for the ten-thousandth time I wished she hadn’t.

I was an asshole. I knew that. Didn’t mean life without her wouldn’t have been a hell of a lot easier. I’m sure people would miss her. People she was nice to and people she owed money to. Just not me.

Silver lining, I guess, was that falling off the wagon most likely meant she was drinking away her feelings because no more Mike. Sure, he’d probably show up a few more times, begging or threatening or smashing headlights like all of her other Prince Charmings, but they never hung around for long once they figured out how big of a bullet they’d really dodged. Fresh off the sober train, you found out quick who she really was.

So, great. I’d have my house back. Have my normal shitty life back. I could study at night instead of standing guard against who knew what. Plus I wouldn’t have to make out with my annoying ass tutor as part of some sketchy, convoluted scheme. Definitely relieved about that. Definitely.

I sighed and headed for the house. If she passed out in the yard, which was
